Timolol is a beta-blocker that decreases pressure in the eye by decreasing the amount of aqueous humour (fluid) that is produced by the eye.

Dogs and Cats

Timolol is used in the eye for treatment of glaucoma. It may be used in an unaffected eye to prevent glaucoma when glaucoma is already present in the other eye.

Active Ingredients:
timolol maleate

This medication does not have an FDA approved indication for use in animals, but it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals. Inform your veterinarian if your pet has asthma, lung disease or heart failure, diabetes, circulation problems, thyroid disorder, kidney disease or liver disease prior to start of treatment with this medication. Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.

Side Effects:
Side effects may include tearing, redness, blurring of vision, and itching which may result in your pet rubbing their eyes. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Timolol should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Clear any debris or discharge from the eye area with a sterile eyewash solution prior to applying this medication. Exercise proper caution not to touch the dropper opening to any surface including eyes or hands as that may contaminate the sterile surface. Always wash your hands before and after applying this medication.
