Kidneys are important because they remove waste substances from the blood, and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. Hills nutritionists and veterinarians developed Prescription Diet® k/d®®, clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your cat's kidney health. In fact, k/d® is clinically tested nutrition to improve & lengthen quality of life.

* Boosts vitality & energy
* Supports appetite & eating enjoyment
* Sustains healthy body condition

This food requires a veterinary prescription.
Hill's is updating their Prescription Diet® packaging and a portion of the name. With Prescription Diet® k/d®, the current descriptor is "Renal Health"; in 2015 it will be "Kidney Care".
Some pets may need help in switching to an updated pet food. Make the transition easy on your cat's digestive system. To transition, mix your pet's current Prescription Diet® k/d® dry with the new k/d® dry. Over 7-10 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current Prescription Diet® k/d® dry while increasing the amount of new k/d® dry. For some pets, the transition may take slightly longer. Please speak to your vet if you have any questions.

in my cat's renal health. Two years ago 14 y.o. "Mr. Kitty" was diagnosed with kidney disease and placed on Hill's prescription food. At the time of his diagnosis he was losing weight and vomiting every few days. Since switching his food he has maintained his weight and rarely vomits. He is a very happy cat! We were told at the time of his diagnosis that, given the stage of his kidney disease, he could have anywhere from weeks to two years. It is now two years, he is 16 y.o., and doing extremely well. We are so happy to have found this rx. food. I was a little too anxious to switch to the Hill's and did not integrate it slowly enough. Because of that he did have a few rough days. If I were to do it over again, I would integrate the new food into the old very slowly, increasing the Hill's in small increments on a daily basis. We've also learned that he does much better w/just the wet #canned# food. As a kitten, our vet told us dry food was the better option so we pushed that and only gave him a small amount of wet food per day. With the transition to Hill's, we've found that he has much less digestive issues w/the canned food and have eliminated the dry.

Why doesn't this come in additional flavors or textures? My 16-year old Maine Coon does like variety...and frequently turns her nose up when she gets served the same thing over and over again. Unfortunately she must be on the prescription diet because of her age and frail kidneys. Come on, people, would YOU want to eat the same thing day in and day out?

Perscription Diet k/d Feline Chicken

By

from Clearwater, FL, United States

I had to change my cat's food due to her health issues. She mostly likes dry cat food but loves this wet food. I am happy that she likes this food so much since she doesn't have a lot of teeth left. Good alternative and a plus for her health!

Proof that Hills K/D is a great kidney diet food!

By

from Minnesota, United States

One of my cats Cooper became very sick and was diagnosed with kidney failure by my vet. The vet stabilized Cooper, gave him fluids and recommended a kidney diet food. I tried several different kidney diet foods and found Cooper only liked and would eat the Hills K/D canned food. I returned Cooper to the vet about 6 weeks after being on the K/D diet food and his kidney function had returned to the high end of normal levels! Cooper was active and healthy! I kept Cooper on the K/D canned food for over a year and then changed him back to a dry food and a year later he became sick again and went back to kidney failure! This time his creatinine level was through the roof!!! The vet stabilized Cooper again and gave him fluids but was not sure he would live long. I put Cooper back on the Hills K/D canned diet food and brought him back to the vet 2 months later to have his kidney levels checked and they were right in the middle of normal range!!! Two years later Cooper is very active and healthy at 13 years old. I learned my lesson to keep him on the Hills KD canned diet food!!! Thanks Hills for a great product!!

My cats have been on prescription diet cat food all their lives. It would be nice if the cost were lower and products could be purchased at local stores instead of vets office or online.

Looking good and "Feline" good, too

By

from Murrells Inlet SC

The k/d canned with chicken and with fish is what we feed our little girl. Our vet suggested that we put her on a diet of this kind because of her age at the time (14yrs.) and the fact that she had some issues with her right kidney. Well, she will be 18 years old in August and is in very good health with both kidneys still working fine. I feel this is because we started her on it when kidney problems were just starting. Being pro active for our little girl is keeping her in the best of health considering her senior years.

        Amazing... raised my cat from near death!!!

        By

        from Saskatoon, SK, Canada

        My 16 yr old Himalayn's kidneys have started to fail and I honestly thought when I took him to the vet... I may not bring him home. She suggested putting him on the HPD K/D stew... and it's SHOCKING how much better he is!!! It's like he got a new lease on life... I can hardly believe the difference. You would never think their food could make that BIG a impact... AMAZING PRODUCT!!!

        My cat was diagnosed with ...

        By

        from Hong Kong

        My cat was diagnosed with kidney problem since he was one year old. After taking k/d his urine problem no longer exists and has been staying healthy in past 3 years. As we are going to adopt an old cat (15 years old) soon, may I know whether an old cat which has no historical kidney problem can eat k/d food too? Or k/d can only be fed on cats with kidney issues?
