Description

Food sensitivities and intolerance are potentially serious problems that can result in sensitive or irritated skin, coat and ear conditions or even gastrointestinal upset. Dogs that have a food sensitivities or intolerance, also called adverse reactions to food, typically experience an abnormal response to the protein in the food. If your dog suffers from adverse reaction to food, it is even more important to feed the right food. At Hills, nutritionists and veterinarians have developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to help manage your dog's dietary sensitivity and help reduce the possibility of adverse reactions to food.

* Formulated with Hill's Hydrolyzed Protein System, highly digestible proteins that minimize the chances of adverse reactions to food
* No intact animal protein to help avoid adverse reactions to food
* Highly digestible carbohydrates and fats to help reduce gastrointestinal workload
* Increased in omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids to help nourish the skin and coat
* Added antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

This food requires a veterinary prescription.
Hill's is updating their Prescription Diet® packaging and a portion of the name. With Prescription Diet® z/d®, the current descriptor is "Ultra Allergen-Free"; in 2015 it will be "Skin/Food Sensitivities".

As a veterinary professional, I understand how crucial it is to feed your pet the appropriate diet. Seeing clients day in and day out who insist on feeding "organic, grain-free, raw, etc" diets drives me crazy because I see the damage it does to their beloved pets. This food is great for food allergy dogs (and no it is not the same as over the counter "allergy" diets because the machines are cleaned and sanitized for hours before production begins ensuring no cross contamination plus the protein is hydrolyzed). My "allergic to everything" mutt has always been itchy because she suffers from food and environmental allergies. Even D/D was making her itch, though not Z/D! It's phenomenal. I absolutely love, trust, and stand by Hill's 110% because their foods are developed by nutritionists with the appropriate credentials. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

My 9 yr-old German Shepherd dog developed allergies about 2 yrs. ago. My vet recommended trying the z/d to rule out food sensitivities. After the first bag, his chewing/scratching was greatly reduced with other measures taken. I tried a couple different dog foods after that and his scratching/ chewing returned. Now, he is back on the z/d but has been reluctant to eat it. Maybe too many recent dietary changes? Otherwise, the z/d was effective but very expensive. It was worth the cost to provide relief for my dog. It has reduced his frequency of stools from 2/day to 1/day. It sometimes seems difficult for him to have a stool. Dog loves it!

By

from Forest, VA, United States

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

My rescue dog had horrible dry skin even with special shampoos and conditioners she was scratching all the time. My vet recommended this and once she switched, not more itching, no more dry flaky skin and she loves it.

Do NOT buy this. You're paying a lot of money for unhealthy food. There are other options and wish I'd realized that before wasting tons of money on this junk. Can I give 0 stars?

Poor packaging

By

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

I bought a 100 lb bag of this very expensive dog food upon recommendation of my vet. Trying everything to help my schnauzer from itching. I guess I can't fault the food not helping. But I do fault the bag for not closing tightly. It has a velcro closing which isn't very secure. The ants found it and invaded.

Great dog food, poor packaging

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

When I buy this dog food, I great for my dog and the paper bag it comes in is great for the environment. Oh wait, no it's not, the packaging was changed to a plastic, non biodegradable bad for the environment bag. Just what I would expect from a world wide animal promoting company.

Our vet recommended Hills z/d for our dog with severe food allergies. It worked like a charm. The long-term belly rash was resolved and Phoenix felt better. His whole disposition changed positively. He is now a very happy dog. So are we!

Prescription dog food is a vet directed item for your dogs health. If you are in this category it is nice to have it delivered quickly to your door step. Because this product is so costly one does not have to pay shipping.

LOVE z/d! But the price...

By

from Arkansas

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

We absolutely love z/d by Hills. Our dog goes crazy over it every day, which he has never done before for any food. He's a little boston terrier who is gassy and frequently vomits in the middle of the night from upset belly. We tried several different types of food before we settled on this per vet recommendation. Our little guy is now 5 night vomit free and that is saying something! We are on a tight budget at the moment which makes the price a little frustrating since we eats like a cow. However, he's worth it and the price is *almost* worth it!

No More Diarrhea!

By

from Kennedale, TX, United States

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

Our Lab mix was adopted from a shelter. He was skinny and had diarrhea or at best very loose stools. Yuk!! Our vet recommended that we try z/d. The difference is amazing. He is healthy with no runny tummy with a beautiful shinny coat! We are careful to only give him very pure treats or use the z/d as treats. Duke loves the taste! The food is expensive but worth it! I highly recommend this food.
