Description

Food sensitivities and intolerance are potentially serious problems that can result in sensitive or irritated skin, coat and ear conditions or even gastrointestinal upset. Dogs that have a food sensitivities or intolerance, also called adverse reactions to food, typically experience an abnormal response to the protein in the food. If your dog suffers from adverse reaction to food, it is even more important to feed the right food. At Hills, nutritionists and veterinarians have developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to help manage your dog's dietary sensitivity and help reduce the possibility of adverse reactions to food.

* Formulated with Hill's Hydrolyzed Protein System, highly digestible proteins that minimize the chances of adverse reactions to food
* No intact animal protein to help avoid adverse reactions to food
* Highly digestible carbohydrates and fats to help reduce gastrointestinal workload
* Increased in omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids to help nourish the skin and coat
* Added antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

This food requires a veterinary prescription.
Hill's is updating their Prescription Diet® packaging and a portion of the name. With Prescription Diet® z/d®, the current descriptor is "Ultra Allergen-Free"; in 2015 it will be "Skin/Food Sensitivities".

Not surprisingly, our female Lab mix has a very sensitive stomach; z/d Ultra is the only thing we've found that she can consistently eat without getting sick (and even then it's hardly foolproof, as anything from a Cheez-It to a leaf in the yard can cause problems for days). We didn't know she had this issue when we got her, and I won't give her up just because she has a bad stomach, but it's not much fun and z/d is the only option we know of that offers any relief.

That said, if we could find a less-expensive brand for her, we'd switch in a heartbeat. Honestly I find the price on this stuff ridiculous. I know that you have to pay for quality and I appreciate that it's available, but spending over $1,000 a year on dog food is beyond anything we ever expected. Incidentally, having to spend that much on food has reduced the amount that we've been able to budget towards other veterinary care, which sucks but is our reality. I thought that signing up for the website and printing out coupons would help, but it turns out that's only a one-time offer and is basically useless.

Anyway- I would only recommend this as a last-ditch option for someone in our situation, but the cost would keep me from recommending it for any other reason. I have no problem with companies making a profit, but I get a pit in my stomach every month when I have to go pick up another bag, and I hope at some point Hills will either drop the price tag a bit or someone else will come out with an option that's viable for our dog.

Quick prescription verification, shipping and delivery

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

By the vet's rec' I ordered the Hill's Prescription Diet Z/D. My pet didn't really enjoy his food for the first couple of days, but since it's a strict diet and I am not allowed to feed my pet anything other than his prescribed meal, he had eventually ate his food because he got hungry. I also got him a couple treats from the same brand/line. Pet Flow quickly verified my pet's prescription with the Vet and shipped our order shortly thereafter. I removed a star because of the packaging. I ripped the bag of food as I was opening the box. I guess I should have been a bit more careful but I think they should have at least stuffed and protected the package a little instead of just sending the bag of food in a box.

Surprised & Confused!

By

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

My 3.2 lb yorkie has had stomach issues for about a month. Diarrhea mostly & some vomiting. It occurred to me that the zd dry food we have feed her for the past 10 years has changed sizes 2x during the past couple months. It went from the larger chunk(apps.1/4 inch sq.) to a flat circle to a mini tiny chunk. Is this all the same ingredients? Has the formula changed?
Even though we were happily surprised with the size change, our yorkie has had intestinal problems since the change. Can I get some info or advice? Thank you!

Such a great product!

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

Been using this for about 5 months because of food and digestive sensitivities. She has had such a turn around since using this z/d product. We are so happy to have found it and so grateful for her return to good health! The cost is about the same as the other "food" available, as well. She scarfs it down each meal! No more scratchy, itchy, unhappy smelly yeasty dog.

Dog loves it!

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

My rescue dog had horrible dry skin even with special shampoos and conditioners she was scratching all the time. My vet recommended this and once she switched, not more itching, no more dry flaky skin and she loves it.

Do NOT buy this. You're paying a lot of money for unhealthy food. There are other options and wish I'd realized that before wasting tons of money on this junk. Can I give 0 stars?

Poor packaging

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

I bought a 100 lb bag of this very expensive dog food upon recommendation of my vet. Trying everything to help my schnauzer from itching. I guess I can't fault the food not helping. But I do fault the bag for not closing tightly. It has a velcro closing which isn't very secure. The ants found it and invaded.

Great dog food, poor packaging

By

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

When I buy this dog food, I great for my dog and the paper bag it comes in is great for the environment. Oh wait, no it's not, the packaging was changed to a plastic, non biodegradable bad for the environment bag. Just what I would expect from a world wide animal promoting company.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

Our vet recommended Hills z/d for our dog with severe food allergies. It worked like a charm. The long-term belly rash was resolved and Phoenix felt better. His whole disposition changed positively. He is now a very happy dog. So are we!
