Food sensitivities and intolerance are potentially serious problems that can result in sensitive or irritated skin, coat and ear conditions or even gastrointestinal upset. Dogs that have a food sensitivities or intolerance, also called adverse reactions to food, typically experience an abnormal response to the protein in the food. If your dog suffers from adverse reaction to food, it is even more important to feed the right food. At Hills, nutritionists and veterinarians have developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to help manage your dog's dietary sensitivity and help reduce the possibility of adverse reactions to food.

* Formulated with Hill's Hydrolyzed Protein System, highly digestible proteins that minimize the chances of adverse reactions to food
* No intact animal protein to help avoid adverse reactions to food
* Highly digestible carbohydrates and fats to help reduce gastrointestinal workload
* Increased in omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids to help nourish the skin and coat
* Added antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

This food is great. Lulu loves the taste of the canned ZD. I tried giving her the dry but because she is so small the kibbles are too big for her try to chew. Lulu was put on ZD because she tested positive for allergies to wheat, rice, corn, milk, and beef. She has envionmental allergies also but she doesn't scratch near as much as she used to.

Not surprisingly, our female Lab mix has a very sensitive stomach; z/d Ultra is the only thing we've found that she can consistently eat without getting sick (and even then it's hardly foolproof, as anything from a Cheez-It to a leaf in the yard can cause problems for days). We didn't know she had this issue when we got her, and I won't give her up just because she has a bad stomach, but it's not much fun and z/d is the only option we know of that offers any relief. That said, if we could find a less-expensive brand for her, we'd switch in a heartbeat. Honestly I find the price on this stuff ridiculous. I know that you have to pay for quality and I appreciate that it's available, but spending over $1,000 a year on dog food is beyond anything we ever expected. Incidentally, having to spend that much on food has reduced the amount that we've been able to budget towards other veterinary care, which sucks but is our reality. I thought that signing up for the website and printing out coupons would help, but it turns out that's only a one-time offer and is basically useless. Anyway- I would only recommend this as a last-ditch option for someone in our situation, but the cost would keep me from recommending it for any other reason. I have no problem with companies making a profit, but I get a pit in my stomach every month when I have to go pick up another bag, and I hope at some point Hills will either drop the price tag a bit or someone else will come out with an option that's viable for our dog.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

I give it to my 5-6 yo dog daily. He refuses to eat it in the early part of the day, not sure why. By the evening meal, he eats it all up along with the canned food by you.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

We switched from Blue Buffalo's grain-free formula which was a few bucks cheaper but Petflow is the best price that I was able to find doing research. I like that with the autoship which we are doing you get a nice discount as well. Our dog suffers from allergies especially during seasonal changes and we also believe he may have some sort of an autoimmune disorder that results in painful blisters, hair loss and itching. We have battled these outbreaks since he was about 6 months old and after two weeks of using the z/d formula we have noticed a significant difference in his skin and hair condition, he also poops less! Easily and highly digestible. A little more expensive than what we were paying before but well worth the value for the benefits this food has provided so far.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

My Shih Tzu had developed an allergy to the food I was feeding her. She had blisters on her skin, constantly licking and scratching so our vet advised me to try z/d. That was a little over 2 months ago and this food is almost a miracle. Her fur is regrowing, getting very shiny, blisters and red skin have disappeared and no more licking and scratching. Food is well worth the price.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

my dog is very picky eater, i have gone through dog food where he wouldn't even touch it only when he got hungry. He's been fighting a staph infection for a year now, the doctor has tried antihistamines and steroids. he finally recommended z/d for food allergies and my dogs skin cleared up almost over night. he still has a little bit but within the week most of it was gone. his skin is now back to normal and you can see his coat looking nice again! finally a product that works! thank you hills! He's also on the canned food and he loves the canned food too, he'll wait at the fridge every morning for me to give him some of the canned z/d!

Although my dog seems to enjoy the food, she also enjoys other not so attractive snacking options so...there you go. Her vet seems to think this is the solution to a problem that he can't diagnose, so we are trying it for the love of our pet. The food is a gimmick, it's more expensive to feed my dog than my entire family per day, and I do not see the magical results it promises.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine Skin/Food Sensitivities Dry Dog Food:

Our dog was experiencing a lot of stomach issues. After trying various things to resolve them, our vet recommended this food. Worked like a charm! He's been much healthier ever since. While it is very expensive, we figure the trade-off is less lab tests and vet bills, so in the long run we're probably saving money.
