I am a breeder of show Beagles, and Nutro has long since been my "show food". A few years back, when a popular brand around the show circuit downgraded its formula, my dogs stood out quite startlingly from the hounds eating the other brand, and I was frequently asked what coat supplements and chalking products I was using to keep coats so dense, soft and their white areas so vivid. No one could believe my dogs were eating a steady diet of Nutro Max, and nothing else. Dogs not being actively shown were always on a rotation of pricy holistic feeds, and when the show dogs were put on these supposed 's star' diets, their coats inevitably went to pot. So I recently switched everyone to Nutro Max Lamb & Rice, which not only saves me between $15-20 per bag as opposed to the other foods, I am astounded how drastically coats have improved! I also notice a healthy change in their energy levels - no more doggie sugar rushes and intense bursts of hyperactivity followed by crashes. They have even activity levels throughout the day, and I know that means Nutro is a meat based, healthy food. I now recommend this shamelessly to anyone who will listen.

My 7 year old Golden Retrievor has his mind set on what foods he actually likes. I have tried many brands and wanted to give Nutro a chance. I kept a bowl out filled with Nutro and he started pushing it away with his nose. I ignored him and figured if it was the only thing in the way of dried food he would have to eat it and eventually he did have some but very little. Maybe it is the size of the pieces as he is a big dog and these are rather small balls. It has all good stuff in it so who knows but I have tried Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Merrick,Rachel Ray (he only likes the buffalo), etc. Seems nothing satisfies his taste etc. Purina ONe Smartblend's, both dried and canned and while it may not compare to the higher end dog foods, this is what he seems to want. It is a shame cause Nutro really seems to be good quality and I will continue to try to see if he eventually will eat it. Who is to say why it doesn't seem to appeal to him but I have bags of Merrick sitting here and others that he simply does not like. All I can say is try it, give it a chance and see if they make a larger ball or shapes for bigger dogs. I appreciated BzzAgents giving me the chance to try it and to give it a fair chance. I haven't given up but as of today, it hasn't seemed to tempt my dog. Good product with great ingredients though.

He'll eat it . . . with coaxing

By

from Clearwater, FL

I have quite a picky dog. I think the only reason he eats at all is because the cats threaten to eat his food if he doesn't, and he'd rather die than let that indignity happen. I've been trying to find a food that he would eat without canned food added to it and would eat consistently. This food met one of those qualifications. The food itself is rather small. About a cm in diameter, so it would be easy for a smaller dog to eat. It has an unobtrusive but kind of boring smell to me, but Jack seemed to like it as he immediately investigated the box and the bag inside when the food came in the mail. The first day he was willing to eat some plain. I was hopefully this would continue, but the novelty wore off, and within a day or two, he would come investigate the dish and wander off without eating. This is not unusual for him. I added canned food, and he has been eating it pretty much consistently ever since. My dog had no issues transitioning. No GI upset of any kind. He rarely does though. I'm satisfied with this outcome, since there are some foods I've gotten that even canned food will not entice him to eat. All in all it seems like a good food but doesn't quite fit my needs. The search continues.

All the dogs loved it!

By

from Tulsa, OK

I have 4 dogs (Jack Russell, 2 Rat Terriers, and a Chihuaua mix) I also have 4 foster dogs. (Jack Russell, Rat Terrier and 2 Chihuaua mix puppies). I have been feeding a dog food that had high ratings but haven't been happy. I was so glad to get this free bag for them to try. EVERY SINGLE DOG LOVED IT!!! They all picked this food over 2 different brands. Now that they've eaten it for a month they are looking great, shiny coats but they are acting like they feel great. I went out and bought a new bag because this is now our new food. I do wish it wasn't so expensive.

A healthy upgrade for our dog

By

from Prescott Valley, AZ

We have been using Nutro Max Pasture Fed Lamb for our dog for approximately one month. This was a nice upgrade from the brand we were using. First, the bits of food may be some what small for our hound/pit mix, but he doesn't seem to mind. My initial reaction on opening the bag was that it did not have that "dog food" smell that so many have. The "dog food" smell I'm referring to is not a bad smell per say, however this food didn't smell like a lot of other dog food. It also has some healthy fats/oils in it and you can tell because although the pieces are dry and crunchy, they do have a bit of oil on them that I noticed when I hand-scooped some into the big guy's dish. My next observation was that the dog had zero flatulence. None. This was not only surprising because it was a food switch, but the dog has gas all the time regardless. We have used a number of healthy supplements, additives, oils etc. and the dog has always had some amount of gas. On this food he has none! Our dog also stopped biting at his feet. After trying out the allergy route, we assumed it may have been a habit, but on this food after just a couple weeks he stopped chewing his feet altogether. My final observation was that he seems to eat less of this food than his previous brand. This seemed a little strange to me, and at first I wrote it off as a fluke. He loves the food, eats quickly at dinner time and continues too eat less than the amount he was eating of the old brand. After watching him and finding that he's healthy, active and totally normal (apart from no gas!!) is that he's getting what he needs out of a smaller amount. I'm no scientist, and am not a veterinarian, but my dog is happy and healthy, and may very well be finally on a food that really works for his system! We're really pleased with this food. In the photo, our former brand is on the left side of the bowl, and our new brand Nitro Max is on the right. We received a bag of Nutro Max Pasture Fed Lamb in exchange for our testing and honest review. We tested, and we honestly love this food for our dog!

Simply Awesome!

By

from Richardson, TX

Peaches, My Olde English Bulldogge, is a picky eater. I am very particular about what I feed her, reading the ingredients as if I were eating it myself. I was extremely pleased to see that MAX Natural Lamb Meal & Rice Recipe Adult DID NOT contain corn of any kind nor did it contain any soy protien. I was a little surprised to see that the main ingredient of the Lamb Meal & Rice recipe was chicken and that lamb didn't make an appearance until ingredient #7. She has never been overly excited about eating. I had just decided that she eats to live instead of living to eat. The day I brought the bag home, she wouldn't stop sniffing the bag. I placed the bag next to her regular food. When she saw me dig into MAX Natural Lamb & Rice Recipe to add to her scoop of regular food, she stood beside her dish waiting with anticipation. She somehow managed to fish out the MAX and glared at me for what was left in her bowl. By the end of the week she was enjoying a full bowl of the MAX Natural Lamb & Rice Recipe and now lets me know when suppertime is instead of waiting for me to decide. Another bonus is, since this in higher in protein and lower in filler, it is digested more completely which leaves smaller stools and less to pick up. I rate this 4/5 only because I am accustomed to seeing Lamb as the main ingredient when I purchase Lamb dog food rather than Chicken.

Isis gives it two ruffs up!

By

from Springdale, MD

Isis can be a very picky dog, so I was afraid that she would not eat it. When I opened up the box and read the ingredients I was so glad that is was so healthy. I gave her a test handful... and she didn't leave a bite. We are super happy with NUTRO MAX... and we are pretty sure that she is as well!

I am always looking for a quality dog food that doesn't break the bank to buy. We have 2 dogs to feed, one is about 125 pounds and the other is 10 pounds. Needless to say, the bigger one is an eating machine! The dogs seemed to like the food very much, I didn't have to trade it out slowly, they took to it right away. They are actually picky about some foods, but liked this one. Seemed to be easily digested. My negatives about this product is the price for the size bag. I would need a larger size, 45-50 pounds, for the amount we go thru weekly. Also, the chunks are fairly large in size and more difficult for my smaller dog to eat.

Sheepdog loves lamb!

By

from Bloomington, IN

Our Great Pyrenees puppy instantly took to this food- so much so that he ate around his old food to get to the Nutro lamb mixture. He is a picky eater, so I was amazed at how much he loves this blend! With the natural recipe list, I feel comfortable feeding it to him. Also, it has a good weight to it. Sometimes, dry dog food kibble feels so light: Nutro's food has weight from the meat product in it. I also did the filler test, where you take a handful of kibble and pour a cup of water over it and see how much it expands (and easy way to determine how many fillers really are in a product). Nutro barely expanded, proving to me what a great product this really is.

He LOVED it!!!

By

from Chatham, VA

What a great product! My baby used to leave food in his bowl all day, not anymore! He gets so excited when he hears the bag, and even seems to have more energy. I had forgotten what a great product Nutro made. Years ago I had a boxer that I could not get housebroken, the vet suggested Nutro. So I ran out and bought it and slowly converted over and wow..... Housebroken! She told me that with regular store bought food with lots of fillers their little tummies digest and work all day, but with a high quality dog food they eat and use the bathroom shortly there after! It worked miracles!
