Our newly rescued pup was having issues regurgitating, and we were possibly looking at hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars in analytical, trial-and-error vet bills (sheesh).

Luckily, our main vet suggested we try Royal Canin's Veterinary Diet Canine Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dry Dog Food - and within a week, our dog was no longer having issues.

Thank goodness!

He devours it and is doing very well. We had him on one of the highest rated dog foods previously, but we think that brand was too rich.

Tip #1 to dog owners with dogs with digestive issues: start at the source first and experiment with different foods. This can possibly prevent you from spending loads of money on unnecessary testing, medicines, and, God forbid, invasive procedures.

Tip #2: Don't rely on this pet owner's opinion of this product - every dog is DIFFERENT! Get to know your pup - groom him/her, brush their teeth, feel their fur ALL over their body, wash them, and pay attention to their daily habits. This includes their poop, their sleep schedule, their activity level and their eating and drinking amounts.

This observation might save their lives!!! And, save you lots of money!

I have mixed feelings about this food. My dog kept getting six over the last 6 months until the vet prescribed this for her. My dog was sick enough that she wouldn't eat anything but loved the taste of this food. It also cleared up her GI issues (which had gotten bad), but is chock full of chicken--to which my dog has a sensitivity. She is constantly licking her paws since being put on this diet and doesn't seem very energetic overall. I'm very thankful that it healed up her GI issues but I can't keep feeding her this food that has significant amounts of chicken in it. I wish there were a hypoallergenic version.

Comments about Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Canine Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dry Dog Food:

My 8 year old dog has severe pancreatitis, the doctors did not think he would make it, but he did !!! So we have had him on a special low fat diet since his scare (1 year ago). We mix between this dry one and the wet royal canin version of the gastrointestinal food! He's perfect and he eats it! He likes the wet version better however.

      Saved my dog's life!

My pet, Niko, had a severe case of pancreatitis last year, many days and treatments later along with high vet bills, brought us to your food and diet. After not wanting to or feeling like eating due to the illness, we offered our pet the moist canned version and he loved it and ate it up right away. Started to incorporate the dry food with the wet food, and no thats all he eats every day twice a day. And we're happy to say he's healthy and a happy dog!

      Excellent product

This is the only food my dog can eat because of her Cushing's. It has been her diet for about 3 years now. She also gets a few dry pieces as treats. I think this has made a significant improvement in her overall health & well being.

I have 2 siberian huskies and they have sensitive stomachs. I feed only this dog food to them and it works great. No diarrhea, upset stomachs, etc.

High quality food, but poor palatability

      By

      from Visalia, CA, United States

My vet recommend this food because it was suspected that my dog has pancreatitis, meaning that high fat food made him ill. Therefore he needed a low fat food like this one. Since my vet recommended this brand I knew I was feeding my dog food that was high quality and safe for my baby. I might be unfairly too harsh with my rating and comments because I have a chihuahua and they are known to be fussy eaters so it might not matter what I feed him, he would of refused it. My dog has been eating this food for years though, just barks at it sometimes because he wants something tasty to eat.

      Very hlepful

      By

My dog Nicky had a pancreatitis attack that was frightening. My vet put Nicky on RC's low fat GI dry and wet food. It's been so good that I put my other two dogs on it. Nicky still has the occasional flare, but this food helps prevent another attack. I am very grateful to Royal Canin for making this product.
